A ‘Peace Banner’ created by 250 children in Hiroshima has been completed 🕊️

The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection held a special event titled “Drawing Peace with Keith Haring” over three days from November 28 to 30, 2025, at the Hiroshima Gate Park (Naka-ku, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture). The event featured an exhibition introducing the background and activities surrounding Keith Haring’s visit to Hiroshima in 1988. In addition, with the aim of passing on Haring’s wish for peace to future generations, a workshop was held in which participants painted a pair of birds on a large banner. Approximately 250 children took part, and the artwork was successfully completed.

Over the three days, approximately 250 participants aged 18 and under took part in the workshop and created a large banner measuring 2.4 meters tall and 5.4 meters wide. The children’s free and expressive drawings overlapped to form a completed artwork filled with their hopes for peace. The banner is currently being considered for display at various locations within Hiroshima City. To ensure that as many people as possible can see the work, we are seeking facilities—such as schools, commercial complexes, and other public spaces—that would be willing to collaborate in exhibiting it.

Participants in the workshop received a complimentary copy of our museum’s workbook, “Drawing Peace with Keith Haring,” published last year. This workbook provides an accessible introduction to Haring’s anti-war and anti-nuclear activism, as well as his visit to Hiroshima. It was created to encourage readers to reflect on peace and freedom through Haring’s work and lifelong commitment to these themes.

In 2023, our museum conducted research on Haring’s stay in Hiroshima, and in 2024 we held the exhibition “Keith Haring: Into 2025” As part of our ongoing efforts, we continue to share the messages of peace that Haring left behind. The recent event in Hiroshima welcomed many participants, providing great encouragement for our continued activities.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, as well as to everyone who supported the event’s organization. Moving forward, our museum will continue to engage with society through art and carry on Haring’s ideas and messages for future generations.

Seeking Facilities and Organizations to Exhibit the Large-Scale Artwork Created by Approximately 250 Children

To share the large banner created by the children during this event with a wider audience, we are seeking facilities and organizations within Hiroshima City—such as public spaces, schools, cultural institutions, and commercial facilities—that would be willing to collaborate in exhibiting the work.
