In Memory of Our Founder, Kazuo Nakamura

We share with deep sadness the passing of our founder, Kazuo Nakamura, on December 5, 2025, just days before what would have been his 79th birthday.

Founder Nakamura established the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection with a vision that went beyond creating a museum. He believed deeply that Keith Haring’s art and the values behind it could redefine what a museum should be: not only a place to preserve art, but a space that inspires connection, compassion, and joy. Just as Haring reimagined what art could do in the world, Nakamura sought to reimagine how a museum could serve its community and speak to broader human experiences.

He shaped the character of the museum through his presence and personality. Affectionately known to many as “Mr. Nakamura,” he greeted staff and visitors with a cheerful wave and brought a sense of warmth, individuality, and openness to the institution. He admired people who expressed themselves boldly and believed deeply in the power of art and human kindness to bring people together and spark meaningful change.

As we honor his memory, we remain fully committed to the mission he championed. The museum will continue sharing Keith Haring’s work and message with audiences in Japan and around the world, upholding the values and spirit that guided Nakamura’s leadership.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and to all who were touched by his vision.

Thank you for your continued support as we carry his legacy forward.
