The photographs were taken by Akira Kishida, whose older brother, Tsutomu Kishida, is the CEO of BROOKLYN ROASTING COMPANY JAPAN. Both were present that day and share firsthand memories of what unfolded around the performance.
The images show Haring drawing freely with chalk on a pedestrian street, as people passing by—skateboarding kids, shoppers, and visitors from overseas—slow down, stop, and begin to gather. The photographs capture not only the act of drawing itself, but also the closeness between Haring and the people around him, as well as the atmosphere of the place.
For the first time, this exhibition also shares personal stories from that day, told from the perspectives of both Akira Kishida and Tsutomu Kishida.
In conjunction with the photo exhibition, a limited-time pop-up shop will be held.
In 1986, Keith Haring opened his own store, the Pop Shop, to sell his merchandise. For Haring, these items were not simply products, but an extension of his work—another way to communicate with people beyond museums and galleries.

He believed that art should not be limited to expensive objects owned by a small number of people, but something that could exist in everyday life and be enjoyed by people of all ages.
This pop-up shop carries forward that way of thinking, offering a wide range of Keith Haring items that continue to be created around the world today.
BROOKLYN ROASTING COMPANY was founded in Brooklyn, New York, with a clear commitment to quality, sustainability, and accessibility. From the way its coffee is sourced and roasted to how it is served, the company approaches its work with care and without pretension.
That sensibility aligns naturally with Keith Haring’s belief that art should exist in everyday life, beyond formal institutions. Hosting this exhibition at BROOKLYN ROASTING COMPANY SHIMOKITAZAWA offers a setting where visitors can encounter Haring in a relaxed, familiar environment—over coffee, in the flow of daily life.
